There should be a comma after
...
"that everyone seems to think they are [here should be comma] but scum."
nope. using a comma runs the risk of turning the "but" into "however" and in any case makes the sentence less funny.
trust me. i'm a comic genius.
Ok.
Wasn't too sure meself.
i may be blagging somewhat.
If I'm getting the sense of it right, there should be a comma after think.
I love discussing grammar, but a lot of people get very defensive, if not outright hostile, if you suggest they are in error. My favourite hate is the misuse of myself, even sometimes as the subject of the sentence when combined with another name or two. As in: 'Bill, Mary and myself went to the ballgame'.
not comma after think, but it's just occured to me there should be a comma before the but. No one spotted that, did they? huh?
I think the "myself" thing comes from people being taught that they shouldnt say "me, Bill and Mary" because you should always put yourself last, but using the word "I" seems too formal and "me" too colloquial, so they say "myself".
I used to work with a chap who was constantly telling customers "if you would just please listen to myself". again, he seemed to think that using the word "me" was too colloquial.
errr try reading what I said again...
"that everyone seems to think they are [here should be comma] but scum."
Will, stop making things up! As soon as I've figured out how to delete comments, everyone will be able to see that you said no such thing.
Very good.
I'll fuck off now.
Ha ha, this is getting silly! I was thinking of maybe how Shakespeare would say it, 'They are but scum'.
Does that make sense?
